Short description
Harry Potter returns for his fourth year at Hogwarts, where the school is hosting the Triwizard Tournament, a dangerous competition between three European schools of magic. Each school is meant to enter one champion, but the Goblet of Fire unexpectedly names Harry as a fourth competitor, even though he is too young and his rivals are older and more experienced. Harry must get through the tournament's lethal tasks, while his scar pains him and other signs suggest Lord Voldemort is returning. He has the help of his friends as he faces each challenge, and the danger grows beyond the contest itself.
The film was directed by Mike Newell, who had previously made Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco and Mona Lisa Smile. It adapts the fourth novel in the series and is the fourth film in the series. Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reprise their roles as Harry, Ron and Hermione, with Brendan Gleeson as Alastor Moody, Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore and Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory. Steve Kloves wrote the screenplay, David Heyman produced, and the large cast and crew reflect the scale of the production.
On a budget of 150 million US dollars, the film took 897 million US dollars worldwide, far exceeding its cost. On IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from around 748,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.8 out of 10 from about 22,653 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 out of 10 from 258 reviews places it slightly below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mike Newell became the lowest-paid director in the history of the "Harry Potter" franchise: he agreed to work for a fee of only 1 million dollars. For comparison, Chris Columbus received 10 million dollars plus a percentage of the total box office revenue for "Philosopher's Stone."
- Inspired by Quentin Tarantino's approach of dividing "Kill Bill" into two parts, the producers wanted to do the same, but director Mike Newell immediately rejected these proposals. The studio's concerns were largely due to the belief that it was simply impossible to fit a 734-page book into three hours of screen time.
- During the filming of his part of the film, Michael Gambon (Dumbledore) constantly wore everyday clothes under his wizard's robes.
- They wanted to entrust the direction of the fourth installment of the 'Potter' series to Alfonso Cuarón again, but he stated that he would first like to finish 'Prisoner of Azkaban' (the third part). As a result, the director became the Englishman Mike Newell.
- On February 7, 2004, a 'great pilgrimage of little girls' took place in London: more than 3000 applicants came to audition for the role of Cho Chang.
- Rowan Atkinson or John Malkovich were widely tipped for the role of Lord Voldemort, but both candidates dropped out. In June 2004, rumors began circulating that the role would go to Ralph Fiennes. Shortly before filming began, this role remained the only acting vacancy.
