Pokémon: The First Movie

A bio-engineered Pokémon named Mewtwo is created in a laboratory using the DNA of the rare Mew. After escaping its creators, Mewtwo seeks to prove its superiority and believes that humans only exploit Pokémon. To achieve this, it lures Ash, Pikachu, and other trainers into an unprecedented battle. The conflict escalates as Mewtwo clones the trainers' Pokémon to challenge the balance between humans and their companions, eventually leading to a confrontation between Mewtwo and Mew.

Directed by Kunihiko Yuyama, this was the second of 28 films in the director's career, following New Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning and preceding Pikachu's Vacation. The production featured a credited cast of 21, including voice actors Rica Matsumoto, Ikue Otani, Mayumi Izuka, Satomi Korogi, Yuji Ueda, and Megumi Hayashibara. The screenplay was written by Takeshi Shudo.

The film had a budget of 30 million USD and earned 164 million USD worldwide. Audience reception is mixed but generally positive, with a rating of 6.3/10 on IMDb from 50,000 votes and 7/10 on TMDB from 1,632 votes. These figures are notably higher than the rating provided by film critics, which stands at 3.9/10 based on 90 reviews.
