The Way We Were

The Way We Were follows Katie Morosky, an outspoken Jewish student with strong political convictions, and Hubbell Gardiner, a wealthy, easygoing WASP and gifted writer, who meet at college in the late 1930s. Years later, during and after the Second World War, their paths cross again in New York. Despite their opposing temperaments and political views, they marry, but their relationship is tested by Hubbell's stalled career and Katie's activism as anti-communist pressures build in Hollywood and beyond.

Sydney Pollack directed the film, the fourth of seventeen he made, between Jeremiah Johnson and The Yakuza. Arthur Laurents wrote the screenplay with Francis Ford Coppola, and Ray Stark produced. Barbra Streisand plays Katie and Robert Redford plays Hubbell, with Bradford Dillman, Lois Chiles, Patrick O'Neal and Viveca Lindfors among the credited cast of 48.

Made for about 5 million dollars, the film took roughly 45 million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 31,000 votes, and on TMDB 7 out of 10 from about 529 votes, showing a similar level of approval at each. A critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 37 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores.
