The Rocketeer
Short description
In 1938, stunt pilot Cliff Secord finds a secret rocket pack that lets him fly. He uses it to become a masked hero around Los Angeles, but the device is wanted by others, including gangsters, federal agents and Nazi spies, and the film star Neville Sinclair takes an interest in both the pack and Cliff's girlfriend, Jenny Blake. The story is based on the Rocketeer comics.
Joe Johnston directed, following Honey, I Shrunk the Kids; the screenplay is by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, and the producers include Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Charles Gordon. Billy Campbell plays Cliff, with Jennifer Connelly as Jenny, Alan Arkin as the mechanic Peevy, Timothy Dalton as Sinclair, Paul Sorvino as Eddie Valentine and Terry O'Quinn as Howard Hughes. The film runs 108 minutes and is a Walt Disney Pictures release made with Silver Screen Partners IV, Gordon Company and Dark Horse Entertainment.
It cost about 42 million dollars and took roughly 47 million worldwide, so it did not recover its budget in cinemas. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from 66 reviews; on TMDB it holds 6.5 out of 10 from 1,084 votes, showing a similar level of approval from audiences.

- Actor Bill Campbell, who once studied advertising, landed the lead role after getting the exact same haircut as the comic book hero after familiarizing himself with Dave Stevens' graphic novel, which the film is based on.
- The role of Cliff Secord, 'The Rocketman', could have gone to Johnny Depp.
