Steve Brooks is a chauvinistic advertising man whose treatment of women finally catches up with him: three of his former lovers murder him. After his death he is offered a deal. He can still reach heaven if he returns to Earth and finds a woman who genuinely loves him. The devil, however, has other ideas, and Steve comes back as a woman named Amanda Brooks. Now living in a body and a world he never respected, he has to win real affection while coping with the attention his new appearance attracts.
Blake Edwards directed and wrote the film, the twenty-fifth of the twenty-seven features he directed, arriving between Skin Deep and Son of the Pink Panther. Ellen Barkin plays Amanda, with Jimmy Smits as Walter Stone, JoBeth Williams as Margo Brofman, Lorraine Bracco as Sheila Faxton, Tony Roberts as Arnold Freidkin and Perry King as Steve Brooks. Tony Adams produced, and the credits list sixty-six cast members and fifty-two crew members.
The comedy fantasy was released in May 1991 and took in about 16 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.8 from roughly 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.9 from 263 votes; a critics' rating of 4.3 from 23 reviews puts professional response below the audience scores on both sites.
