Short description

In a ruined city after an unspecified catastrophe, food is scarce and grain has become currency. A butcher named Clapet runs a shop on the ground floor of an apartment building and supplies the tenants with meat, though its source is not what it appears to be. The residents depend on him, and the arrangement has continued through a series of hired handymen who do not last long. Louison, a former circus performer, arrives to take the latest such job and settles into the building, where he meets Clapet's daughter, Julie. Their growing attachment disrupts the household's routine and the expectations the tenants have of the butcher.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro directed the film, their first feature together, and wrote the screenplay with Gilles Adrien. Dominique Pinon plays Louison, Marie-Laure Dougnac plays Julie, and Jean-Claude Dreyfus plays the butcher. Made for about 4 million dollars, it is a dark comedy that blends fantasy and science fiction, set in a timeless, dilapidated world.

On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.3 from roughly 1,700 votes. Jeunet went on to direct The City of Lost Children, Alien Resurrection, Amélie and later features, while Caro's subsequent credits include The City of Lost Children and Dante 01.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The first feature film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro.
  • The idea of a cannibal butcher came to director Jean-Pierre Jeunet while he was living in an apartment above a butcher shop. Every morning at 7 a.m., he heard the metallic clang of knives, and his girlfriend told him that the butcher was carving up the neighbors, and that it would be their turn next week.
  • The film's budget was very meager—the sets were simple and unrefined, the cast consisted of friends and relatives of directors Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and props were often made from junk found in landfills.
