Short description
This outrageous time-travel comedy follows the misadventures of a wacky medieval knight (Jean Reno) and his faithful servant when they are accidentally transported to contemporary times by a senile sorcerer. Mayhem rules as these 12th-century visitors try adapting to the wildly confusing modern world. To avoid being stuck here for good, however, they soon begin an all-out cosmic assault on their former castle -- now a luxury hotel -- in their quest to return to the past.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mel Brooks was brought in to write and record the characters' lines in English for the film's release in the US. The result was categorically disliked by audiences at preview screenings. This also displeased director/screenwriter Jean-Marie Poiré, who stated that Brooks' efforts had turned a comedy about a knight from France into a parody with such a pronounced French accent that the meaning of what was said could only be understood with great difficulty. For this reason, Miramax delayed the film's release to the American market until the summer of 1996 and included standard subtitles in the film. Regardless, Brooks was paid $500,000.
