Woyzeck

Woyzeck is a soldier in a small garrison town in nineteenth-century Germany, scraping together money through odd jobs to support Marie and the child they have together. He serves as barber to his captain and volunteers for experiments run by a local doctor, who puts him on a diet of peas. When Marie begins an affair with the drum major, Woyzeck's jealousy and despair push him toward violence.

Werner Herzog directed and wrote the screenplay, drawing on Georg Büchner's play. The film sits seventh in the twenty-two features Herzog has directed in chronological order, coming after Nosferatu the Vampyre and before Fitzcarraldo. Klaus Kinski plays Woyzeck, with Eva Mattes as Marie and supporting turns from Wolfgang Reichmann, Willy Semmelrogge, Josef Bierbichler and Paul Burian. Joschi Arpa produced for Werner Herzog Filmproduktion with ZDF.

Released in May 1979, the film runs eighty-two minutes. On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from roughly eleven thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 from a much smaller group of voters. A critics' rating of 7.8 from fourteen reviews places professional assessments above the broader audience scores.
