Short description

Having fathered an illegitimate child with his lover, Marie, feckless soldier Franz Woyzeck takes odd jobs around his small town to provide some extra money for them. One of them is volunteering for experiments conducted by a local doctor, who puts Woyzeck on a diet of peas. This serves to drive him close to madness, and the discovery that Marie is involved in an affair with the local drum major exacerbates the situation. Pushed too far, Woyzeck resorts to violence.

The entire film consists of only 27 editing cuts.
The prototype for the hero of the play and film, Johann Christian Woyzeck, was publicly executed in Leipzig on August 27, 1824, for murder.
Following Woyzeck's execution, extensive debate unfolded in the press regarding the degree of guilt and sanity of the executed man. Echoes of these disputes were reflected in the image created by playwright Georg Büchner.
Georg Büchner began writing the play 'Woyzeck' in 1836 – 12 years after Woyzeck's execution.
Georg Büchner died on February 19, 1837, before he could finish the play. However, the material he had written was sufficient for the play to be published and staged.
In 1921, Austrian expressionist composer Alban Berg created the famous opera 'Woyzeck' based on Büchner's play.
When Woyzeck strikes Marie with the knife for the first time, it can be noticed that he is holding it with the blade facing backward.
