Short description

A group of elderly residents at a Florida retirement home discover that swimming in a nearby pool restores their energy and vitality. The pool belongs to a rented house where alien visitors, back on Earth to collect cocoons left behind on an earlier trip, are storing the cocoons, and the water's effects come from them. The residents keep returning for more, which brings the aliens' mission unwanted attention and puts both sides in a difficult position.

Ron Howard directed the film, the third of the thirty-two features he has directed in chronological order, following Splash and preceding Gung Ho. Tom Benedek wrote the screenplay, and Richard D. Zanuck, David Brown and Lili Fini Zanuck produced. The cast includes Don Ameche, Wilford Brimley and Hume Cronyn as the older men, with Steve Guttenberg, Tahnee Welch and Brian Dennehy among the supporting roles.

Made for about 18 million US dollars, the film took in roughly 85 million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 73,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from about 1,450 votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 out of 10 from 49 reviews places professional response slightly above the audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • At the time of filming, Wilford Brimley was only 50 years old. To make him appear much older than his age, his hair was dyed gray.
  • Ron Howard's brother, father, and mother appear in cameo roles in the film.
  • Robert Zemeckis was originally intended to direct the film, but after about a year of working on the project, he was replaced by Ron Howard. The director later explained his departure by saying that he showed the studio executives a work-in-progress version of his other project, 'Romancing the Stone' (1984), which made a very negative impression on them and, in the opinion of many, was doomed to fail.
  • Humphrey Cronin and Jessica Tandy, who played the elderly couple Joseph and Alma Finley in the film, were actually married for many years.
  • After the film's release, the special effects team admitted in an interview that the dolphins shown in the underwater scenes were not real, but specially constructed robots.
