Maniac
Short description
Frank Zito owns a shop that restores and sells mannequins, and he keeps mostly to himself. His quiet routine changes when Anna, a young artist, asks for his help with an upcoming exhibition. A friendship forms between them, but it stirs the violent compulsions Frank keeps hidden, and he is torn between a chance at an ordinary life and the urge to kill again.
This 2012 horror thriller is a remake of William Lustig's 1980 film of the same name, with Alexandre Aja and Grégory Levasseur writing the screenplay and Lustig among the producers. Franck Khalfoun directed, placing it second in his filmography between P2 and Amityville: The Awakening. Elijah Wood plays Frank, with Nora Arnezeder as Anna and America Olivo as Frank's mother. The production, mounted by Canal+, Ciné+, La Petite Reine and Studio 37 across the United States and France, cost about six million dollars and returned roughly three million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.1 from around 43,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 from about a thousand votes, a modest reception from a fairly small audience. Running 89 minutes, it was made by a crew of 206 and a credited cast of 30.
What's left behind the scenes
- After Frank kills the girl in the parking lot, he stands with a knife in one hand and a scalp in the other. His reflection can be seen in the car door, stylized as a poster for the original film "Maniac" (1980).
- When Frank meets a girl on a dating site, she says she pictured him as overweight, with long black hair and problem skin. This is exactly how the protagonist of the original film looked.
- All of Elijah Wood's lines were written during post-production, however, the actor was present on set from beginning to end, even when he wasn't in the frame. During filming, he simply stood behind the camera operator.
