Stonehearst Asylum
Short description
Edward Newgate arrives at Stonehearst Asylum in 1899 to take up his first post as a doctor, and is welcomed by the institution's superintendent, Silas Lamb. The methods practiced there are unusually permissive for the period: patients are neither restrained nor sedated, and are encouraged to inhabit their delusions. Newgate becomes drawn to Eliza Graves, a patient committed after an attack on her husband, while unexplained events within the building lead him toward a discovery about how the asylum is actually run.
The film adapts Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The System of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether," with Joe Gangemi writing the screenplay for director Brad Anderson. Anderson came to the project after The Call, the sixth film he directed. Kate Beckinsale plays Eliza Graves, Jim Sturgess plays Newgate, Ben Kingsley plays Lamb, and Michael Caine plays Dr. Benjamin Salt; David Thewlis and Brendan Gleeson also appear. Mel Gibson, Bruce Davey and Mark Amin produced.
Released in October 2014, the film runs 112 minutes and is a horror, mystery and thriller set largely inside the asylum walls. It earned about 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from roughly 65,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9 from about 1,600 votes, indicating a generally favourable audience response. Its critics' rating stands at 5.4 from 55 reviews, noticeably lower than the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The name of David Tulis's character is Mickey Finn. In slang, this refers to a drink laced with a substance given to an unsuspecting person to incapacitate them.
- When Edward Newgate feeds an elderly woman who had previously refused to eat, she grabs his shoulders. In the next shot, from behind the hero, she is holding his head. This error is repeated with each subsequent frame change.
- At the beginning of the film, when Mickey Finn removes Edward Newgate's coat, the scarf remains around his neck. In the next shot, it is gone.
- The plot is based on one of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories, “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether”.
- Filming took place in Bulgaria, and some scenes were shot in the Vrana Royal Palace on the outskirts of Sofia.
