Take Shelter

Take Shelter follows Curtis LaForche, a husband and father living in a small Ohio town with his wife, Samantha, and their six-year-old daughter, Hannah, who is deaf. Curtis begins to experience intense dreams and waking visions of an apocalyptic storm bearing down on his home and family. Unsure whether these are warnings of something real or symptoms of a mental illness, he becomes preoccupied with the threat, and his efforts to prepare for it place strain on his marriage and his relationships with those around him.

The film was directed by Jeff Nichols, who also wrote the screenplay, marking his second feature after Shotgun Stories in 2007 and preceding Mud, Loving, Midnight Special, The Bikeriders and Love Letter to Texas. Michael Shannon plays Curtis, with Jessica Chastain as Samantha, Shea Whigham as Dewart, Tova Stewart as Hannah, Katy Mixon as Nat and Robert Longstreet as Jim. Sophia Lin and Tyler Davidson produced.

Made for about 5 million dollars, the film returned roughly 4 million dollars worldwide, a modest result relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3 from around 115,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.1 from roughly 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 8.1 from 167 reviews places it noticeably above the audience scores, indicating stronger approval from reviewers than from the wider viewing public.
