The Eye

The Eye follows Wong Kar Mun, a young woman who lost her sight at the age of two and undergoes a corneal transplant that restores her vision. What should be a new beginning soon turns unsettling: she begins to perceive figures and presences that others around her cannot see, and these visions seem tied to deaths she has no way of preventing. Struggling to understand what the transplant has brought her, Mun looks into the history of the donated cornea and its original owner, searching for a way to break the hold these apparitions have over her life.

The film was directed and written by Danny Pang and Oxide Pang Chun, working with co-writer Jojo Hui Yuet-Chun, and produced by Eric Tsang, Peter Chan and Lawrence Cheng Tan-Shui. Angelica Lee plays Mun, with Lawrence Chou Chun-Wai, Candy Lo Hau-Yam, Edmund Chen, Yut Lai So and Chadatirud Lertaveesin among a credited cast of 44. For both Pang brothers, it was their first feature in the chronological filmography listed here, preceding The Eye 2, The Messengers and Bangkok Dangerous, and it launched the series that continued with The Eye 2.

Released in 2002 and running 98 minutes, the horror film was a modest production relative to its 11 million USD budget and returned 2 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 102 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 out of 10 from 479 votes, putting critical and audience responses close together.
