Short description
Lola and Manni are a couple living in Berlin. Manni works as a small-time courier for a criminal, and when he loses a bag holding a large sum of his boss's money on the subway, he calls Lola in a panic. He has twenty minutes to hand the cash over, and if he fails he plans to rob a store instead. Lola sets off through the city to find the money and reach him in time. Her desperate run plays out more than once, with small differences along the way sending the story in new directions.
Tom Tykwer wrote and directed the film, his first feature in the chronology of his career, followed later by Heaven, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer and Cloud Atlas. Franka Potente plays Lola, with Moritz Bleibtreu as Manni and Herbert Knaup as her father. Shot in Germany by X Filme Creative Pool and WDR, it runs eighty minutes.
Made for about two million dollars and earning roughly eight million worldwide, the film returned several times its budget. It holds a 7.6 rating on IMDb from around 217,000 votes and a 7.3 on TMDB from a much smaller base of about 2,670. Critics' rating of 8.2 from 92 reviews sits above both audience scores, indicating stronger praise from reviewers than from the general public.
What's left behind the scenes
- The woman from whom Manny borrows the phone card is actually the mother of Moritz Bleibtroj – Monika Bleibtroj.
- Tom Tykwer was bothered by the blank wall and asked production designer Alexander Männes to paint a portrait of actress Kim Novak as she appeared in Hitchcock's 'Vertigo'. Unfortunately, Alexander didn't remember what Kim looked like, so Tykwer suggested depicting her from the back. The painting was completed in 15 minutes.
- Franke Potente had to go seven weeks without washing her hair. The reason was that the red dye in her hair was too sensitive to water.
- The two phrases at the very beginning of the film (“The ball is round” and “The game lasts 90 minutes”) actually belong to the legendary German football coach Sepp Herberger.
- The woman from whom Manny borrows a phone card is actually the mother of Moritz Bleibtreu – Monika Bleibtreu.
- When Lola plays roulette, she gets the number 20. In fact, the film crew did not intend to arrange this outcome, but 20 came up during one of the first attempts.
- The film opens with the voice of narrator Hans Petzsch. He is the most popular fairy tale narrator in Germany. Every German who listened to fairy tale records as a child recognizes his unique voice.
- The glass clocks in the bank were broken by a small pebble fired from an air rifle.
- It took a full five weeks to convince the management of the Berlin supermarket to allow a robbery scene to be filmed there.
