Housesitter

An architect named Newton Davis builds his dream house in his hometown as a gift for Becky, the woman he has loved since childhood, intending to propose to her there. She turns him down, and the empty house sits unused while he returns to Boston. There he meets Gwen Phillips, a waitress whose colorful stories are not always true. Their encounter lasts a single night, but Gwen later travels to the town, moves into the vacant house without Newton's knowledge and presents herself to his parents and neighbors as his wife. When Newton visits the house, he finds himself greeted as a married man and faced with bills and congratulations he never expected.

Frank Oz directed the film, which came after What About Bob? and before The Indian in the Cupboard in the list of his features. Steve Martin plays Newton, Goldie Hawn plays Gwen, and Dana Delany appears as Becky. Mark Stein wrote the screenplay, Brian Grazer produced, and Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment were behind the production, with a budget of 26 million dollars. The film took 95 million dollars worldwide.
