Factotum

Factotum follows Henry Chinaski, a writer scraping by in Los Angeles on a string of temporary jobs at factories, warehouses and elsewhere. He takes work only as far as it allows him to pursue what matters to him: drinking, betting on horses, and writing stories and poems that literary magazines keep rejecting. Two women, Jan and Laura, move in and out of his life, sharing his taste for alcohol, while his attempts to earn a living keep interrupting the writing he cares about. The film is based on the writings of Charles Bukowski, whose alter ego Chinaski is the central figure.

Bent Hamer directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jim Stark, who also produced; it is the fourth feature in Hamer's directing career, following features released in 1997, 1998 and 2003, and it was shot across several European countries with American settings. Matt Dillon plays Chinaski, with Lili Taylor as Jan and Marisa Tomei as Laura, in a cast of 43 credited performers supported by 48 credited crew members.

Made for about 1 million USD, the film returned roughly 3 million USD worldwide, a multiple of its production cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.2 out of 10 from around 230 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 6.8 out of 10 from 121 reviews, so critics rated it somewhat higher than the audience score.
