Short description
Family Business is a 1989 crime drama about three generations of McMullen men. Jessie is a career criminal who has spent a lifetime in jails, brawls and cons and still feels the pull of one more score. His son Vito has put his own shady youth behind him and built an honest, comfortable life, and he wants Adam, his bright son, to be the first McMullen without a criminal past. Adam has other ideas: he approaches his grandfather with a plan to steal a newly developed serum and documents from a laboratory for a million dollars. Vito refuses at first, then reluctantly joins the scheme, and the three set out to pull off a robbery meant to be quick, clean and free of violence.
Sidney Lumet directed the film, the nineteenth of the twenty-six features he made, following Running on Empty and preceding Q & A. Vincent Patrick wrote the screenplay, Lawrence Gordon produced, and Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick play Jessie, Vito and Adam, with Rosanna DeSoto, Janet Carroll and Victoria Jackson in supporting roles.
Released in December 1989, the film took about 12 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a production with three prominent leads. On IMDb it holds 5.8 from roughly 15,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 from around 291 votes, while a critics' rating of 4.9 from seventeen reviews sits below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began on November 14, 1988, after three weeks of rehearsals in New York. Including a rather lengthy rehearsal period in the shooting schedule was standard practice for director Sidney Lumet (1924-2011), even from his earliest days in television.
- Vince Patrick, who wrote the screenplay based on his own novel (1985), came up with the general plot idea when, having recently become a grandfather, he noticed his own traits and mannerisms in his grandson.
