Mean Girls
Short description
Mean Girls follows Cady Heron, a teenager who has spent her childhood in Africa being homeschooled by her zoologist parents. When she moves to Illinois and enters a public high school for the first time, she finds the social rules there far harder to read than anything she encountered before. She befriends two outsiders, Janis and Damian, who persuade her to infiltrate the Plastics, the school's most exclusive and popular girl clique. Cady's position becomes precarious once she falls for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of Regina George, the group's manipulative leader.
The film was directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, and it was produced by Lorne Michaels. It is the third of fifteen features Waters has directed, coming between Freaky Friday and Just Like Heaven. Lindsay Lohan plays Cady, with Rachel McAdams as Regina George, Lizzy Caplan as Janis Ian, Lacey Chabert as Gretchen Wieners, Amanda Seyfried as Karen Smith and Daniel Franzese as Damian.
Made for a budget of seventeen million dollars, the film took about one hundred twenty-nine million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly 483,000 votes; on TMDB it rates 7.2 from just under 9,700 votes. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 220 reviews places professional assessment in line with general audience opinion.
What's left behind the scenes
- There was only one candidate for the role of Gretchen, and Lacey Chabert was approved for the role after the very first audition.
- Actress Amy Poehler, who plays Mrs. George, is only seven years older than her on-screen daughter Rachel McAdams (Regina George).
- The initial version of the film received an R rating for somewhat risky jokes. They were subsequently cut, and the film received a PG-13 rating.
- Amanda Seyfried, who played Karen, auditioned for the role of Regina, and was even briefly cast in the role before producer Lorne Michaels decided that another role would suit her better.
- In the book, which served as the basis for the film, the most popular girl in school is known as the “Queen Bee.” In the film, this girl is named Regina, which translates to “Queen” from Latin.
