Veronica Guerin

Veronica Guerin was an Irish investigative journalist who, in the mid-1990s, used her newspaper column to expose the drug gangs that had come to dominate Dublin's underworld. Working from the addicts on the street up to the dealers and their suppliers, she pursued names and details that the authorities had not touched, drawing on a nervous informant named John Traynor to reach John Gilligan, the man at the top of the trade. Her reporting made her a public figure and also made her a target. The film follows that work and the danger it brought to her and to her family.

Joel Schumacher directed this 2003 release, the sixteenth of the twenty-one films he directed in chronological order, arriving between Phone Booth and The Phantom of the Opera. Carol Doyle and Mary Agnes Donoghue wrote the screenplay, and Jerry Bruckheimer produced. Cate Blanchett plays Guerin, with Gerard McSorley as Gilligan, Ciarán Hinds as Traynor and Brenda Fricker as Bernie Guerin among a credited cast of seventy-four. The production spanned Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
