Full River Red

Set during the Song Dynasty, Full River Red begins with a murder at the residence of Chancellor Qin Hui, shortly after he has met with envoys from the neighbouring Jin state. A letter has gone missing as well, and with a crucial diplomatic meeting approaching, the chancellor gives two men only a short time to identify the killer and recover the document. One is a low-ranking corporal whose past ties to Jin make him suspect; the other is the garrison's deputy commander. What starts as a search for a culprit widens into a conspiracy that touches the fate of the empire.

Zhang Yimou directed and co-wrote the film with Chen Yu; it is the twenty-second of the twenty-five features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Snipers and Under the Light. The large credited cast is led by Shen Teng as Zhang Da, Jackson Yee as Sun Jun, Zhang Yi as He Li, Lei Jiayin as Qin Hui, Yunpeng Yue as Wu Yichun and Wang Jiayi as Zither. The film mixes comedy and history with mystery and thriller elements and runs 157 minutes.

Released in January 2023, it became a major commercial success, taking about 674 million dollars worldwide. Audience scores sit at 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 4,000 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 185 votes, while a critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 18 reviews places critical response somewhat above the audience scores.
