Short description

[REC]² picks up shortly after the events of the first film, in the same quarantined Barcelona apartment building where an outbreak has turned residents into violent, flesh-hungry attackers. A special forces squad, accompanied by a medical officer and equipped with helmet cameras, enters the sealed building to assess the situation and obtain samples from the infected. The mission is complicated by the presence of a doctor with his own agenda, by three teenagers and others who slip in through the sewers, and by the growing number of infected inside. The film continues the found-footage format of its predecessor.

Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza return as directors and co-writers, with Manu Díez joining them on the script. It is the fourth feature for Balagueró, following Darkness, Fragile and [REC], and the third for Plaza after Romasanta: The Werewolf Hunt and [REC]. Manuela Velasco reprises her role as Ángela Vidal, alongside Jonathan D. Mellor, Óscar Zafra, Ariel Casas, Alejandro Casaseca and Pablo Rosso.

Made for about 6 million USD, the film took roughly 18 million USD worldwide. It holds a 6.5 rating on IMDb from around 84,000 votes and a 6.6 on TMDB from about 2,254 votes, while a critics' score of 6.4 from 72 reviews places it close to the audience average.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The roles of special forces, police officers, and bystanders near the building were played not by actors, but by ordinary people.
  • As with the original film, all scenes of the movie were filmed in one of the districts of Barcelona.
  • The actors portraying special forces personnel filmed a large amount of footage using cameras mounted on their helmets.
  • Many of the zombie screams were added during post-production. The screams during filming would have drowned out all dialogue and conversations, so they were simply dubbed in later.
  • Due to the temperature difference with the surface during filming in the sewers, the camera lenses fogged up immediately.
  • The sound of helicopter blades and engines was added separately because renting real helicopters would have been too expensive.
  • The actors playing special forces personnel had a special training day where they were taught how to handle weapons.
