1408 centres on Mike Enslin, a writer who makes a living exposing supposed hauntings in hotels and other places. He does not believe in anything he cannot see for himself. His research leads him to the Dolphin Hotel in New York and to room 1408, a room with a long history of unexplained and violent deaths, which has stood empty for years. The hotel's manager, Gerald Olin, warns him repeatedly against staying there, but Enslin insists on spending the night. What begins as another sceptical investigation turns into an ordeal, and the question becomes whether he will survive it. The film is based on a short story by Stephen King.
Mikael Håfström directed, working from a screenplay by Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski and Matt Greenberg. It was the fourth feature Håfström directed, following Evil, Drowning Ghost and Derailed, and it came before Shanghai, The Rite and Escape Plan. John Cusack plays Enslin, with Samuel L. Jackson as Olin, Mary McCormack as Lilly Enslin, Jasmine Jessica Anthony as Katie, Tony Shalhoub as Sam Farrell and Len Cariou as Mike's father. Lorenzo di Bonaventura produced for di Bonaventura Pictures and Dimension Films.
Made for about 25 million dollars, the film took roughly 133 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around 313,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from about 5,000. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 177 reviews places it close to both audience scores.
