Space Truckers

Set in the 22nd century, when freight is hauled between the colonies of a settled solar system, Space Truckers follows John Canyon, an independent haulier who wants nothing to do with a powerful corporation that dominates his trade. Strapped for money and short of options, he takes on a sealed cargo run to Earth for a generous fee and asks no questions about what he is carrying. He is joined by his colleague Mike Pucci and Cindy, and the crew eventually discovers that the containers hold an army of destructive war machines. A scientist turned half-machine pirate captain also wants the shipment, putting the truckers between the cargo and the pirates.

Stuart Gordon directed the film, which arrived in 1996 between Castle Freak and Dagon in his filmography, from a screenplay by Ted Mann; Gordon, Mann and Peter Newman produced. Dennis Hopper plays John Canyon, Stephen Dorff and Debi Mazar play Mike Pucci and Cindy, and Charles Dance plays Nabel, also known as Macanudo, with George Wendt and Shane Rimmer in supporting roles.

The production cost about 25 million US dollars and took roughly 2 million dollars worldwide, a wide gap between spending and returns. On IMDb it holds 5.4 out of 10 from around 9,700 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 out of 10 from about 200 votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 12 reviews places professional assessment in much the same range as the audience scores.
