Short description
Peter Pan is a Walt Disney Productions animated adventure based on J.M. Barrie's play and the character he created. Wendy Darling and her brothers John and Michael live in London with their parents and their dog Nana. Wendy tells her younger brothers stories about Peter Pan, the boy who refuses to grow up, and their father, unhappy with these fantasies, announces that it will be Wendy's last night in the nursery. That night Peter arrives at the house looking for his shadow and takes the three children with him to Neverland, a world of pirates, fairies and mermaids. There they meet Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys and the Indian princess Tiger Lily, and find themselves in conflict with Captain Hook, who wants rid of Peter.
The film was released in 1953 and runs 77 minutes. It was directed by Hamilton Luske, Wilfred Jackson and Clyde Geronimi, all of whom had directed Alice in Wonderland two years earlier and would go on to Lady and the Tramp in 1955; it was Luske's thirteenth of fifteen directing credits, Jackson's fifteenth of seventeen and Geronimi's twelfth of fifteen. The screenplay was written by Ted Sears and Erdman Penner with J.M. Barrie, Walt Disney produced, and among the voice cast are Bobby Driscoll as Peter Pan, Kathryn Beaumont as Wendy, Hans Conried as Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, and Bill Thompson as Mr. Smee. Made for about 4 million dollars, it took roughly 87 million worldwide. On TMDB it holds 7.2 out of 10 from over 5,800 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film proved to be relatively successful, but Walt Disney (1901-1966) was still disappointed with it, believing that Peter Pan came across as cold and unattractive. Experts in the work of Peter Pan's creator, the Scottish playwright J. M. Barrie (1860-1937), insisted that Disney had done a magnificent job, because Barrie himself had originally portrayed Pan as a heartless sociopath.
- Initially, Barrie planned to write that Nana would travel to Neverland with the children, and the end of the story would be much darker.
- While searching for the right sound for Tinker Bell, the filmmakers eventually realized that bells would not work and instead used small pieces of aluminum fastened together.
- The first character sketches for 'Peter Pan' appeared at Disney Studios in 1940. At that time, Disney artists often traced live actors as prototypes for their animated characters. The prototype for the little fairy Tinker Bell was a typical 'calendar girl,' Margaret Kerry, who also posed for one of the mermaids.
