Short description
Anna has spent a decade rebuilding her life after the death of her husband, Sean, and is now preparing to marry her boyfriend, Joseph. At her engagement party, a ten-year-old boy introduces himself as Sean and claims to be her dead husband reborn. Anna dismisses him at first, but the child knows things about her marriage that he could not possibly know, and she begins to wonder whether he is telling the truth.
Birth was directed by Jonathan Glazer, who wrote the screenplay with Jean-Claude Carrière and Milo Addica. It followed his debut, Sexy Beast, and was the second of the six features he has directed. Nicole Kidman plays Anna, with Cameron Bright as the boy, Danny Huston as Joseph, and Lauren Bacall, Alison Elliott and Arliss Howard in supporting roles. The production, mounted by New Line Cinema and Fine Line Features among others, cost about 20 million USD and returned roughly 24 million USD worldwide.
The film sits in modest territory with audiences: on IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from over 38,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1/10 from a much smaller pool. A critics' rating of 5.2/10 across 147 reviews places it below both audience scores, so professional assessments were less favourable than viewer ones. It runs 100 minutes.

- Anna and Joseph are listening to Richard Wagner's “Walküre: First Act” at the opera. An excerpt from another Wagner opera – “Lohengrin” – also plays in the film.
- The scene in which nude Nicole Kidman and Cameron Bright sit in the same bathtub was filmed using special effects: the actors never filmed together for this episode.
- Christina Applegate turned down the role of the main character due to the abundance of sexual scenes in the film; she later claimed that the role was rewritten at the request of Nicole Kidman.
