Short description
Yashvardhan Raichand heads a wealthy Delhi family with his wife Nandini and their two sons: Rahul, who was adopted, and Rohan, their biological child. The parents have long expected Rahul to marry a woman they consider suitable, but he falls in love with Anjali, a spirited young woman from a modest background, and marries her against his father's wishes. Yash disowns him, and Rahul settles with Anjali in London. Ten years later, Rohan learns what happened to his older brother, and sets out to find him and bring the family back together, a task that proves harder than he expects.
The film was directed by Karan Johar, his second feature after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and the second of nine films he has directed to date. It was written by Sheena Parikh and produced by Yash Johar. Amitabh Bachchan plays Yash, with Shah Rukh Khan as Rahul, Hrithik Roshan as Rohan, Kajol as Anjali, Jaya Bachchan as Nandini and Kareena Kapoor Khan as Pooja, among a credited cast of 33 and a crew of 41.
Made for a budget of about 8 million USD, the film took roughly 11 million USD worldwide. It runs 209 minutes. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from 53,932 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.7/10 from 632 votes. A film critics' rating of 8.8/10 from 11 reviews places it above both audience scores.

- Shah Rukh Khan's son, Aryan Khan, plays young Rahul at the beginning of the film (a boy aged 3-4 years).
- The first Indian film to be shown in cinemas in Germany (with German subtitles).
- Aishwarya Rai refused the role in this film (she was offered the role of Poo).
- When Hrithik Roshan watched Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan perform a reconciliation scene, their acting left such an impression on him that he found himself unable to play his own part. He was only able to appear before the cameras the following day, after Bachchan calmed him down and assured him that everything would be fine.
- There is no grammatical necessity for the letter "e" at the end of the second "Kabhi" in the full Hindi title of the film "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham." Director Karan Johar added it because he believes in numerology (each letter is assigned a specific numerical value, the sum of the numbers gives a number that has either a beneficial or negative effect).
- The song "It's Raining Men" was used without the permission of its owners. The director was sued in the UK and fined, which he paid.
- Initially, actress Waheeda Rehman was cast as the mother of Amitabh Bachchan's character and even began filming, but she later left the project following the death of her husband.
- The character played by Amitabh Bachchan was based on Yash Johar, the film's producer and father of the movie's director, Karan Johar.
- Abhishek Bachchan initially filmed a cameo role, but his scenes were subsequently cut.
- Amitabh and Jaya Bhaduri dance to a snippet of the famous song "Aati Kya Khandala" at the end of the song "Say Shava Shava." This song is from Rani Mukerji's first successful film, Ghulam (1998), where she starred with Aamir Khan.
- Aamir Khan mentioned in an interview that when he watched the film at a preview attended by the entire creative team, he disliked the movie so much that he left immediately after the screening. He departed without even seeing director Karan Johar or lead actor Shah Rukh Khan, and without saying a word to them (let alone congratulating them on the completion of the project).
