Short description
Robin Hood and Little John return to England after years away fighting in the Crusades, older and worn down by the wars they served in for King Richard. Robin finds Sherwood changed and Maid Marian living quietly, having taken religious vows. The Sheriff of Nottingham is still in place, and the old hostility between the two men resurfaces. Robin wants only to settle in peace with Marian, but the king's orders against rebels force him into one more confrontation with his longtime enemy.
Richard Lester directed the film, the eighth of the thirteen features he directed in chronological order, following Royal Flash in 1975 and preceding Butch and Sundance: The Early Days in 1979. James Goldman wrote the screenplay, Denis O'Dell produced, and Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn lead the cast as Robin and Marian, with Robert Shaw as the Sheriff, Richard Harris as King Richard, Nicol Williamson as Little John and Denholm Elliott as Will Scarlet. Columbia Pictures and Rastar Productions made the film for about 5 million dollars.
The film drew modest audience ratings, with 6.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 15,000 votes and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 280 votes. A critics' rating of 6.6 out of 10 from 37 reviews places professional assessment slightly above what general viewers gave it on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was not shot in England, but in Spain.
- To a certain extent, Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993) agreed to play Marian because of her sons. When her younger sons learned that Sean Connery (1930-2020) had been cast as Robin Hood, they began to beg her to accept the role because then she would be acting “with James Bond himself.” The actress agreed.
- Ezmond Knight (1906-1987) lost an eye during the Battle of the Denmark Strait (which took place in May 1941). For the cameo role he played at the beginning of the film, he removed his glass eye.
- Despite the not always laudatory reviews regarding the film's ending, in which Robin and Marian died, Sean Connery always maintained that he enjoyed the film. After many years of playing the same character in the James Bond films, he was happy to play someone in a film that would definitely not have a sequel.
- Producers initially intended to give the role of Robin Hood to Albert Finney, and the role of Little John to Sean Connery.
- The film was shown in Soviet cinemas under the title 'The Return of Robin Hood'.
