Short description
Julie survives a car crash that kills her husband, a celebrated composer, and their young daughter. Left alone, she withdraws from her former life, giving up her home and possessions and cutting ties with everyone she knew. Her attempt at solitude does not hold: people keep drawing her back, among them Olivier, a friend and former assistant to her husband who has long been in love with her, and Sandrine, a music journalist with an interest in the dead composer's work. Julie also learns of a woman she never knew existed in her husband's life, a discovery that complicates her break with the past.
Krzysztof Kieślowski directed and co-wrote the film with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, working with producer Marin Karmitz. It is the eleventh of the thirteen features he directed, arriving between The Double Life of Véronique and Three Colors: Red, and it opens a trilogy named for the colors of the French flag. Juliette Binoche plays Julie, with Benoît Régent as Olivier and Florence Pernel as Sandrine. The film runs 98 minutes and took about 2 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.9 from over 108,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6 from roughly 2,000.
What's left behind the scenes
- In one scene, Julie carries a box with the word "blanco" (Spanish for "white") written on it. In the next shot, the heroine is shown from behind, with a man in blue walking past her on the right and a woman in red on the left. This is a reference to the structure of the "Three Colors" trilogy – blue, white, red – as the colors of the French flag. These same colors are also played with in another episode, where children in red and white swim trunks jump into a pool with blue water.
- When Patrice's photos are shown on television, one of them shows him with the famous Bulgarian-born pianist Alexis Weissenberg (1929-2012).
- In one scene, a sugar cube dissolving in a cup of coffee is shown in close-up. Since the director wanted the sugar to dissolve in the coffee in exactly 5 seconds, Krzysztof Kieślowski made his assistants experiment with different varieties of coffee to determine the sugar’s dissolution time in each and find the one he needed. It turned out that it takes sugar from 3 to 11 seconds to dissolve in different types of coffee.
- In the scene where Juliette Binoche’s character scrapes her hand against the wall, a prosthetic was initially considered to protect the actress’s hand, but the artificial hand was too noticeable. Binoche chose to forgo it and scratched her hand until it bled.
