Scrooge McDuck sets out from Duckburg with his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie, their friend Webby, and the pilot Launchpad McQuack to track down a treasure once belonging to the thief Collie Baba, hidden somewhere in the desert. What the group recovers turns out to include an old lamp, and the treasure hunt becomes something else entirely once its occupant is released. The sorcerer Merlock and his henchman Dijon are pursuing the same prize and want the lamp for themselves, putting the ducks in the middle of a contest over what the lamp can grant.
The film is a 1990 animated adventure directed and produced by Bob Hathcock, with a screenplay by Alan Burnett. Walt Disney Animation produced it in France, and it runs 74 minutes. Alan Young voices Scrooge, Terence McGovern voices Launchpad, and Russi Taylor voices all four of the children. Richard Libertini voices Dijon, Christopher Lloyd voices Merlock, and June Foray voices Mrs. Featherby.
Made for about 20 million dollars, it returned roughly 18 million worldwide, a shortfall that made it a rare misstep for the studio at the time. Audiences have settled it at 6.8 on IMDb from around 30,000 votes and 6.7 on TMDB from roughly 955 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 62 reviews places it close to those viewer scores, a mild but not divisive response.
