In medieval China, two rival martial arts schools, the Shaolin and the Ming, are locked in a bitter struggle over a pair of legendary swords whose possession is said to grant mastery over the martial world. A young man named Mo-kei, raised in the Shaolin tradition after his parents died on the field of honour, is destined to leave his sheltered upbringing, confront the dark forces behind the feud, avenge his family and try to bring the warring factions together.
Wong Jing directed and wrote this 1993 Hong Kong action fantasy, the thirteenth of the thirty-seven films he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Last Hero in China and Future Cops. Jet Li leads the cast as Mo-kei and also serves as one of the producers. Sharla Cheung, Chingmy Yau, Gigi Lai, Sammo Hung and Francis Ng round out the main roles.
The film's blend of martial arts, comedy, fantasy and magical flying has found a modest but durable following, reflected in its ratings of around six and a half out of ten across thousands of audience votes. It sits squarely in the early 1990s boom of Hong Kong martial arts cinema, when Wong Jing and Jet Li were both at their most prolific.
