I Love Trouble
Short description
I Love Trouble is a 1994 American comedy set in Chicago, where two rival reporters find themselves chasing the same story. Peter Brackett is a seasoned, cynical columnist, while Sabrina Peterson is an ambitious newcomer at a competing paper. Assigned to cover a train accident, they each suspect the crash was no accident, and their separate investigations push them toward the same conclusion: sabotage with a cover-up behind it. Reluctantly, they pool their efforts, drawn into a dangerous search for evidence and for whoever ordered the wreck, a hunt that turns the pursuers into targets and forces an uneasy partnership into something warmer.
Charles Shyer directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Nancy Meyers, who also produced with Bruce A. Block. The film followed Shyer's Baby Boom and Father of the Bride, and preceded Father of the Bride Part II. Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts lead as Brackett and Peterson, with Saul Rubinek, James Rebhorn, Robert Loggia and Kelly Rutherford in support, among a credited cast of 76 and crew of 58.
Released in June 1994, the film runs 123 minutes. It was made for about 45 million dollars and returned roughly 62 million worldwide, a modest result against its cost. Audiences rate it 5.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 13,000 votes and 5.5 out of 10 on TMDB from about 234 votes, while critics give it 4.4 out of 10 across 45 reviews, placing it below even the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- It is claimed that Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte did not get along during filming. Nolte later said that this was the worst film he had ever appeared in, while Roberts called Nolte the worst actor she had ever worked with.
- Towards the end of filming, Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts refused to film scenes together, so changes had to be made to the script, and the editors had a lot of work to do. According to some estimates, the film's leads spent more time filming with stand-ins than with each other.
- Due to the constant scandals between the lead actors and the need to make certain changes to the filming process because of it all, the marketing department of 'Disney' even considered recasting the film and turning what was originally advertised as a romantic comedy into a thriller.
- To film one of the scenes, the film crew had to bring 500 geese to Wisconsin from Iowa.
- Nick Nolte’s character jokes with Sabrina (Julia Roberts) that he liked the article where she portrayed a prostitute. This is a reference to Julia Roberts’ famous role in the film “Pretty Woman” (1990).
