Richie Rich is the only child of the wealthiest couple in the world, raised in a mansion filled with everything money can buy, from his own theme park to a personal butler named Cadbury. What he lacks is friends his own age. When his parents travel by plane and disappear over the ocean after a saboteur's bomb damages the aircraft, Richie is left in charge of the family business. The man behind the sabotage, a greedy executive named Van Dough, wants control of the Rich empire for himself, and Richie turns to Cadbury, his new friends from the neighbourhood and a loyal dog for help in stopping him.
Donald Petrie directed the film, which came after Grumpy Old Men and The Favor in his filmography. Macaulay Culkin plays Richie, with John Larroquette as Van Dough, Edward Herrmann and Christine Ebersole as his parents, Jonathan Hyde as Cadbury and Michael McShane as Professor Keenbean. Tom S. Parker and Jim Jennewein wrote the screenplay, and Joel Silver and John Davis produced.
Made for about 40 million dollars, the film earned roughly 38 million worldwide and sits at 5.5 out of 10 on IMDb from around 79,000 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB from a few thousand votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 out of 10, drawn from 22 reviews, places it below the audience scores.
