A divorced choreographer, Jaiprakash Paswan, is allowed to see his young daughter only once a week after the court sets the terms of his separation from his wife, Janki. Unable to accept such limited contact, he takes a drastic step: he disguises himself as an elderly woman and applies for a position as his own daughter's nanny in the household of his former father-in-law, Durgaprasad Bhardwaj. Living under the same roof in his new identity brings him closer to the child, but it also demands constant vigilance, since the deception must hold up before his ex-wife, her father and everyone else around him, and the complications multiply as his disguised self becomes part of the family's daily life.
The film is a Hindi-language comedy drama rooted in a story that has travelled across cinemas: it is a remake of the 1996 Tamil film Avvai Shanmugi, which in turn drew on the Hollywood comedy Mrs. Doubtfire. Kamal Haasan directs and writes the screenplay, and also produces and stars, playing both the divorced father and his older woman persona. The cast includes Tabu as Janki, Amrish Puri as Durgaprasad, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal and Johnny Walker. It was Haasan's first outing as a director, followed by Hey Ram in 2000.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 from considerably fewer votes, a modest figure that reflects a small sample rather than broad disagreement.
