Short description
Jane and Roxy Ryan are seventeen-year-old twins who share a birthday but little else. Jane is a diligent honors student bound for Manhattan to compete for a college scholarship, while Roxy, the rebellious one, tags along hoping to slip onto the set of a music video by a band she follows. Their separate errands in the city quickly go wrong, and the sisters find themselves caught up in a chaotic day involving a truant officer on Roxy's trail, a smuggler, and a pair of young men they meet along the way. What begins as a trip neither wanted becomes a test of whether the twins can rely on each other.
Dennie Gordon directed the film, her third feature after Joe Dirt and What a Girl Wants. The screenplay is by Adam Cooper, Bill Collage and Emily Fox, and Denise Di Novi produced with Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen. The twins star as Jane and Roxy, with Eugene Levy, Andy Richter, Riley Smith and Jared Padalecki in supporting roles, part of a credited cast of 37 and crew of 88. Made for a budget of 30 million dollars, the film returned about 21 million worldwide.
Reception was modest across measures. On IMDb the rating stands at 5 out of 10 from roughly 26,000 votes, and on TMDB it is 6.1 out of 10 from about 952 votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 116 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Mary-Kate Olsen (who played Roxy) had to learn to drive cars with a manual transmission for the filming.
- At the beginning of the film, several childhood photos of Jane and Roxy (played by Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen, respectively) with their mother, who later died, are shown. These are actually childhood photographs of Ashley and Mary-Kate with their biological mother, whose image the filmmakers replaced with the image of the characters’ mother in the film.
