Short description

In the immediate post-war period, amidst the rubble of a poverty-ridden Naples, two kids, Carmine and Celestina, try to survive as best they can by helping each other out. One night, they secretly board a ship bound for New York to reach Celestina’s sister, who emigrated to America several years earlier. The two children join the many Italian emigrants seeking a new life in America and arrive in an unknown metropolis, which, after several misadventures, they will learn to call home.

What's left behind the scenes

Federico Fellini and Tullio Pinelli wrote a treatment (a detailed description of the future project's concept), which Gabriele Salvatores used as the basis for the screenplay, even though they themselves had never been to the USA. Salvatores preferred to depict New York based on this treatment as not being too realistic, thereby giving it an air of naive expectations.
Once, upon arriving at the Cinecittà studios (located on the outskirts of Rome) at the very beginning of the filming of his debut feature—the 1983 musical comedy 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'—Gabriele Salvatores met Federico Fellini, who was filming the historical drama 'And the Ship Sails On'. Fellini asked Salvatores how he made a living, and when he replied that he was making movies, Fellini said: 'Hang in there!'
The famous shot of the Brooklyn Bridge is a reference to Sergio Leone's crime drama 'Once Upon a Time in America' (1983). This is one of Gabriele Salvatores' favorite films.
