Set in Berlin, this drama follows Nina, a shy teenage orphan who begins working as a garden cleaner. She forms a romantic bond with Toni, an impulsive girl who leads Nina into a life of theft. Simultaneously, a woman named Françoise is released from a psychiatric hospital by her husband, Pierre. Upon seeing Nina, Françoise becomes convinced that the girl is her daughter, who was kidnapped many years prior, though her claim is met with disbelief by those around her.
The film was directed by Christian Petzold, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Harun Farocki. Released in 2005, it is the second film in a chronological list of Petzold's work, following The State I Am In. The cast features Julia Hummer as Nina, Sabine Timoteo as Toni, Marianne Basler as Françoise, and Aurélien Recoing as Pierre, with supporting roles played by Benno Fürmann and Anna Schudt. A joint production between Germany and France, the movie has a runtime of 85 minutes.
Audience reception is generally positive, reflected by a 6.8 rating on IMDb from 1,700 votes and a 6.1 rating on TMDB based on 37 votes.
