My Sassy Girl

Gyeon-woo is a soft-spoken university student with little sense of what he wants from life. On a subway platform he comes to the aid of a young woman who is completely drunk, and when the passengers around them assume he is her boyfriend, he ends up looking after her. She turns out to be domineering and unpredictable, dragging him into situations he would never seek out on his own, and the two begin an odd, lopsided friendship that slowly turns into something deeper. Behind her difficult behaviour lies a sadness she does not talk about.

The film is a Korean romantic comedy written and directed by Kwak Jae-yong, the first entry in the chronological list of his features, followed by The Classic, Windstruck, Cyborg She and A Year-End Medley. It was produced by Chul Shin through Shin Cine Communications. Jun Ji-hyun plays the girl and Cha Tae-hyun plays Gyeon-woo, with Kim In-mun, Song Ok-suk, Han Jin-hee and Hyun Sook-hee among the credited supporting cast of twenty-four.

Released in July 2001 and running 137 minutes, the film earned about 32 million US dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.9 out of 10 from roughly 53,000 votes, and on TMDB it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 683 votes, so its reputation rests on a large and broadly favourable audience response.
