Fallen Angels
Short description
Fallen Angels follows a disillusioned hitman and the agent who arranges his jobs and cleans up after them, though the two rarely meet face to face. Tired of his work and considering getting out, he drifts through nighttime Hong Kong, where he crosses paths with an eccentric young woman and with a mute ex-convict who makes his living through unusual late-night schemes. The film also takes in the agent's own loneliness in the rundown hotel where both she and the mute man live, and the strange bond forming between them.
Wong Kar-wai directed and wrote the film, the fifth of the eighteen features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Ashes of Time and Happy Together. It was produced by Jet Tone Production with Jeff Lau Chun-Wai as producer, and it runs 98 minutes.
Leon Lai plays the hitman Wong Chi-Ming, with Michelle Reis as the agent, Takeshi Kaneshiro as the mute He Zhiwu, Charlie Yeung as Charlie and Karen Mok as Blondie, among a credited cast of 22. On IMDb the film holds 7.6 out of 10 from over 48,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.7 from around 1,400 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 from 22 reviews puts it broadly in line with those audience scores.

- The character of Takeshi Kaneshiro, named Ho Chiu, while hiding from the police, mentions that he had number 223 in prison. In 'Chungking Express' (1994), Wong Kar-wai's previous film, Takeshi Kaneshiro also played a role, and his character was also named Ho Chiu, or Policeman #223.
- Director and screenwriter Wong Kar-wai and cinematographer Christopher Doyle specifically used wide-angle lenses and shot many scenes in close-up to ensure the film's style differed from that of 'Chungking Express'.
