A father in a quiet suburban community scrambles for a last-minute replacement when the clown booked for his son's birthday party cancels. He finds an old clown outfit in the attic, puts it on to salvage the celebration, and the party goes off well enough. The problem starts afterwards: the costume will not come off, and any attempt to remove it causes him intense pain. As the suit seems to merge with his skin, his behaviour changes too, and his wife and son are left facing something that has taken hold of the man of the house. The story stays largely confined to the family home as the situation escalates.
Jon Watts directed and co-wrote with Christopher Ford, and Eli Roth was among the producers. It was Watts's first feature, arriving before Cop Car and well before his Spider-Man films. Andy Powers plays the father Kent, with Laura Allen as his wife Meg, Christian Distefano as their son Jack, and Peter Stormare appearing as Karlsson. The production drew on a credited cast of 49 and a crew of 127, and it took about 4 million dollars worldwide.
On TMDB the film holds a 5.8 rating from roughly 1,500 votes, which suggests a modest reception rather than a broad one.
