Short description
Harold Lee is a Korean-American investment banker whose colleagues dump their weekend work on him, while his roommate Kumar Patel, an Indian-American medical student, sabotages every job interview his father arranges. The two friends share an apartment, spend their evenings drinking and smoking marijuana, and are opposites who get along anyway. After a night of smoking, a television commercial for the White Castle hamburger chain leaves them hungry, and they set off through New Jersey to find one, running into police, rednecks and a car-stealing Neil Patrick Harris along the way.
Danny Leiner directed the film, his second feature after Dude, Where's My Car? in 2000, from a screenplay by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. John Cho and Kal Penn star as the title pair, with Paula Garcés, Neil Patrick Harris, David Krumholtz and Eddie Kaye Thomas among a credited cast of 41.
Made for about 9 million dollars, the film took roughly 24 million worldwide, a solid return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 215,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.6 from a much smaller base of about 2,400. Critics gave it 6.5 from 146 reviews, close to the audience score on IMDb and slightly above it on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- Neil Patrick Harris portrays a character named Neil Patrick Harris. The credits list it exactly this way, and it doesn't say he is playing “himself.” It is claimed that this was done to emphasize that the actor is playing a parody of himself.
- During the filming of the scene where Harold and Kumar walk to the Scarecrow's house, John Cho had no idea there was a German Shepherd living in the enclosure. His frightened reaction to the dog's barking was completely genuine.
