Bree Osbourne, a transgender woman in Los Angeles, is saving money from two jobs for a gender-affirming operation when a phone call interrupts her plans. The caller is Toby, a teenage runaway in New York who is looking for his father and does not know that his parent has transitioned. Bree travels across the country to help him, and the two end up on a road trip together, with Bree's surgical schedule and her reluctance to explain the truth shaping how the journey unfolds.
Duncan Tucker wrote and directed the film, his first feature, which was produced by Rene Bastian, Linda Moran and Lucy Cooper for Belladonna Productions. Felicity Huffman plays Bree, with Kevin Zegers as Toby, and Fionnula Flanagan, Burt Young, Carrie Preston and Elizabeth Peña in supporting roles.
Made for about 1 million dollars, Transamerica took roughly 13 million dollars worldwide, a strong return for an independent release. It holds a 7.3 rating on IMDb from around 43,000 votes and a 7 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 541 votes. The film critics' rating stands at 7 out of 10 from 145 reviews, placing professional and audience assessments closely in line.
