The Devil's General

The Devil's General is a German war drama set in Berlin in 1941, during the height of Nazi military success. Its central figure is General Harry Harras, a celebrated Luftwaffe officer and flying ace from the First World War who despises the Nazi regime yet continues to serve it. His independence and his open criticism put him under scrutiny, and SS-Gruppenführer Schmidt-Lausitz works to bring him down, while Harras's own divided position leaves him distrusted by both the regime's loyalists and its opponents. The film is an adaptation of Carl Zuckmayer's play of the same name.

Helmut Käutner directed, and wrote the screenplay with George Hurdalek and Gyula Trebitsch, with Walter Koppel and Trebitsch producing for Real-Film. Curd Jürgens takes the lead as Harras, heading a credited cast of 32 that includes Viktor de Kowa as Schmidt-Lausitz, Karl John, Marianne Koch, Eva Ingeborg Scholz and Camilla Spira. The film runs 117 minutes and sits between Käutner's 1942 film Anushka and his 1956 film The Captain from Kopenick. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.3/10 from around 1,400 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 6.8/10 from 48 votes.
