Something Wild

Charles Driggs is a successful company vice-president with a settled life until a lunch he walks out on brings him into contact with Audrey Hankel, a free-spirited stranger who tracks him down in the street. She takes him along on a weekend away, and what starts as an impulsive detour pulls him into petty lawbreaking and a growing attraction. The trip turns dangerous when Ray Sinclair, Audrey's husband, reappears after time in prison, setting up a confrontation between the two men.

Jonathan Demme directed the film, his sixth in a run of fourteen features, arriving between Swing Shift and Married to the Mob. E. Max Frye wrote the screenplay, and Demme produced with Kenneth Utt. Jeff Daniels plays Charles, Melanie Griffith plays Audrey, and Ray Liotta plays Ray, with Margaret Colin and Leib Lensky among a credited cast of fifty and a crew of eighty-five.

Released in November 1986, the film cost about seven million dollars and returned roughly eight million worldwide, a modest theatrical result. Audiences rate it 6.9 out of 10 on IMDb from around 24,000 votes and 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB from about 425 votes, while critics give it 7.5 out of 10 from forty-nine reviews, a stronger critical than audience showing. It blends comedy, crime and romance.
