Uzumaki is a Japanese horror and fantasy film set in a small town where an obsession with spirals spreads among the residents. The story follows Kirie Goshima, a student who begins to notice strange behaviour around her, starting when her boyfriend's father becomes fixated on recording a snail's shell. His preoccupation deepens until he dies in a washing machine, his body twisted into a spiral. Similar disturbances soon affect other townspeople, and the patterns take an increasingly dangerous hold on the community.
The film was directed by Higuchinsky from a screenplay by Kengo Kaji, and it was released in Japan in early 2000. Eriko Hatsune plays Kirie, with Fhi Fan as her boyfriend Shuichi Saito and Ren Osugi as his father, among a cast of twenty credited performers. It is based on Junji Ito's manga of the same name.
Made on a budget of about one million dollars, the film received a critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 28 reviews, higher than its audience scores of 6.1 on IMDb from roughly 9,900 votes and 5.9 on TMDB from 275 votes. That gap suggests critics responded to the adaptation more warmly than general viewers did.
