Ed Pekurny is a video store clerk in San Francisco whose life takes an unexpected turn when a struggling cable network selects him as the subject of a new kind of television show. The concept is simple: cameras follow an ordinary person around the clock, broadcasting his daily routines to a national audience. With little to lose, Ed agrees, and the program quickly becomes a hit, turning him into a celebrity. The arrangement grows more complicated when he falls for Shari, the girlfriend of his brother Ray, and the private becomes public entertainment for millions of viewers.

Ron Howard directed the film, the twelfth of the thirty-two he has directed in chronological order, following Ransom and preceding How the Grinch Stole Christmas, from a screenplay by Émile Gaudreault, Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. Matthew McConaughey plays Ed, with Woody Harrelson as Ray, Jenna Elfman as Shari, Sally Kirkland, Martin Landau and Ellen DeGeneres in supporting roles. It was released in March 1999.

The production carried a budget of 80 million dollars and returned 35 million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.1 from around 47,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6 from 722 votes. A critics' rating of 6.2 from 47 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
