Nanni Moretti directs and stars in The Son's Room, a 2001 Italian drama set in the coastal city of Ancona. Moretti plays Giovanni, a psychoanalyst who divides his time between the patients who fill his consulting room and a comfortable family life with his wife Paola and their teenage children Irene and Andrea. One Sunday morning, an urgent call from a patient keeps Giovanni from a run he had planned with his son. Andrea goes diving with friends instead, and does not come back. The loss of the boy pulls the family apart in different ways, leaving Giovanni barely able to work and each of the survivors isolated in grief.
Laura Morante plays Paola, with Jasmine Trinca as Irene, Giuseppe Sanfelice as Andrea, and Silvio Orlando and Stefano Accorsi among the patients in Giovanni's practice. The screenplay was written by Heidrun Schleef, Linda Ferri and Moretti, and the film runs 99 minutes. It was released in March 2001 and took in around 12 million dollars worldwide.
The film sits between Caro diario and To Each His Own Cinema in Moretti's directing career. On IMDb it holds a 7.3 rating from roughly 23,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a 7.1 from about 563 votes; a critics' rating of 7.5 from 85 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.
