Marcello Mio

Marcello Mio follows Chiara Mastroianni, an actress worn down by being measured against her famous parents, Marcello Mastroianni and Catherine Deneuve. After one too many auditions where she is asked to perform in her father's manner, she begins living as him: she dresses as Marcello, speaks as him, and asks those around her to treat her as an actor rather than an actress. Friends and family take it for a passing joke, but Chiara holds to the new identity, and the boundary between performance and reality grows harder for everyone near her to locate.

Christophe Honoré directed and wrote the film, the ninth feature in the chronological list of his work, arriving after Winter Boy and before Orange-Flavoured Wedding. Chiara Mastroianni plays a version of herself, with Catherine Deneuve, Fabrice Luchini, Nicole Garcia, Benjamin Biolay and Melvil Poupaud appearing as themselves among a credited cast of 29. Philippe Martin and David Thion produced the Italian-French co-production, which runs 121 minutes and took about 2 million dollars worldwide.
