Short description
After World War II, former Wehrmacht officer Clemens Forell is sentenced to forced labour and sent to a Soviet camp in the far east of Siberia. He survives years of punishing work in the mines, sustained by the hope of returning to his wife and children. With help from the camp doctor, he manages to escape, beginning an odyssey on foot and by whatever transport he can find that carries him across Siberia and Central Asia toward the Iranian border and, eventually, home. A camp commander pursues him along the way.
The film is a German production directed by Hardy Martins, with a screenplay by Bastian Clevé and Jimmy C. Gerum as producer. Bernhard Bettermann plays Forell, alongside Michael Mendl, Anatoliy Kotenyov, André Hennicke, Hans Peter Hallwachs and Hans-Uwe Bauer among a credited cast of thirty. Hardy Martins made his feature directing debut with this film, which runs 158 minutes.
It was released in December 2001. Made for around 15 million dollars, it found a substantial audience over the years, reflected in an IMDb rating of 7.3 from roughly 8,700 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.2 from 159 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The name Klemens Forell is fictional. The real-life prototype of the main character was named Cornelius Rost (German: Cornelius Rost, 1922—1983). The author used a different name due to concerns about potential problems with the KGB after the book was published in 1955.
- Both grandfathers of Bernhard Bettermann, who played the main character, were sent to Soviet labor camps after the end of the Great Patriotic War.
