Arsène Lupin is a French adventure film set in late nineteenth-century France, where the title character pursues a life of theft while aiming at something far larger than jewellery. Raised by a father who taught him the trade, Lupin uses disguise, charm and a personal code of honour to rob the wealthy, until he crosses paths with the Countess of Cagliostro, a woman as dangerous as she is alluring. Their involvement draws him into a hunt for the lost treasure of the French kings, which a secret royalist order also wants, and his feelings for her complicate the pursuit.
Jean-Paul Salomé directed and co-wrote the film with Laurent Vachaud and Nicolas Saada, working from the stories of Maurice Leblanc. It was Salomé's first feature-length credit among those listed chronologically, ahead of Female Agents, The Chameleon, Mama Weed, La Syndicaliste and The Money Maker. Romain Duris plays Lupin, with Kristin Scott Thomas as Joséphine, Eva Green as Clarisse, Pascal Greggory as Beaumagnan, Robin Renucci as the Duke of Dreux-Soubise and Patrick Toomey as Léonard. A co-production between the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and France, it had a budget of about 23 million dollars.
The film received a muted reception. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from roughly 7,700 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 5.3 out of 10 from around 370 votes, indicating limited audience enthusiasm for the production on both platforms.
