The Pigeon Tunnel

The Pigeon Tunnel is a documentary about David Cornwell, the man the literary world came to know as John le Carré. Cornwell spent part of his earlier life in intelligence work before turning to writing, and the film examines the path that took him from that world of espionage into a celebrated career as a novelist. Through interviews and reconstructed passages, it looks at how his personal history and his time as a spy fed into the fiction he later produced.

Errol Morris directed and wrote the film, and he also produced it alongside Stephen Cornwell and Dominic Crossley-Holland. It was made by Storyteller Productions, The Ink Factory, Fourth Floor Productions and Jago Films, with the United Kingdom and the United States among its countries of production. Cornwell appears as himself, while a small cast of actors portrays figures from his life, among them Jake Dove as the teenage David, Charlotte Hamblin as Olive Cornwell, Garry Cooper as Ronnie Cornwell, Simon Harrison as Kim Philby and Douglas Rankine as Rudolf Hess. Running 92 minutes, the film sits at the start of Morris's recent documentary work, preceding Chaos: The Manson Murders.

Released in October 2023, The Pigeon Tunnel drew modest but positive attention from viewers. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 2,200 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 out of 10 from a much smaller pool of 39 votes.
